Shopping in the Netherlands is rarely dull – from big chains to unique boutiques, there’s something for everyone. But did you know that some of the best shopping experiences are found outside the well-known shopping streets? If you love surprising finds, local makers, and an authentic atmosphere, here are our favorite hidden shopping gems in Amsterdam, Utrecht, The Hague, and Zaandam.

.

Amsterdam – Off the Beaten Path in Oud-West
Most visitors know Kalverstraat and the Nine Streets, but if you want to shop somewhere truly unique, take the tram to Oud-West.

Jan Pieter Heijestraat
This street in Amsterdam-West is a creative hotspot full of small specialty shops, artisanal coffee bars, and sustainable fashion stores. Think vintage, Scandinavian design, and handmade jewelry. Be sure not to miss side streets like Kinkerstraat for even more hidden gems.

Extra tip: Combine your visit with a stroll around the Ten Katemarkt or lunch at De Hallen, where culture, street food, and shopping come together.

.

Utrecht – Local Charm Outside the City Center
While the Oudegracht is beautiful, the truly unique shops lie just outside.

Twijnstraat & Oosterkade
Twijnstraat is Utrecht’s oldest shopping street, and you can immediately feel the atmosphere: quirky, cozy, and full of character. You’ll find organic specialty shops and stylish concept stores. Just around the corner is Oosterkade, an up-and-coming street with creative entrepreneurs, interior shops, and hidden lunch spots.

Extra tip: Start your day with a coffee at 30ml and then take a leisurely walk towards Rotsoord – an old industrial area that now buzzes with hotspots.

.

The Hague – Artistic Shopping in the Zeeheldenkwartier
Away from the hustle and bustle of Grote Marktstraat, you’ll find the charming Zeeheldenkwartier – the perfect place for an afternoon of wandering and discovering.

Piet Heinstraat & Prins Hendrikstraat
Here, you’ll find local fashion designers, sustainable brands, and cozy cafés. The vibe is relaxed, and you’ll feel more like a local than a tourist. Perfect for original gifts, vintage clothing, and artisanal treats.

Extra tip: Every Thursday evening is late-night shopping, and many stores participate. Ideal if you want to explore the city during the day and shop in peace at night.

.

Zaandam – Authentic and Surprising in the City Center and Beyond
Zaandam surprises many visitors with its mix of history, design, and innovative shops.

Westzijde & Gedempte Gracht
Although Gedempte Gracht is well-known, it’s the boutiques in the side streets and along Westzijde that offer a truly unique shopping experience. From local fashion and second-hand treasures to artisanal treats from the Zaan region.

Extra tip: Also, take a walk to Zaanbocht in Wormerveer – a beautiful area along the water full of special shops and great terraces. A perfect trip if you’re staying in the region a bit longer.

.
