Public Transport in the Netherlands: How to Travel Easily by Train, Tram, Bus, Metro and OV-fiets

Have you arrived at one of our Inntel Hotels? Then it's time to discover the Netherlands. Fortunately, travelling by public transport in the Netherlands is easy, safe and efficient.

Whether you're planning a day trip to Amsterdam, visiting a museum or exploring another Dutch city, you can reach almost anywhere by train, tram, metro, bus or OV-fiets (public rental bike). In this guide, we'll explain how public transport in the Netherlands works and share useful tips for a smooth and worry-free journey.

Travelling by Train in the Netherlands

The train is the fastest way to travel between Dutch cities. Nearly every major city has a central railway station, and trains run several times an hour.

  • Check departure times and service updates on NS.nl or in the NS app.

  • Remember to check in and check out at the station.

  • Check in using a valid ticket, your contactless debit card, credit card, Apple Pay or Google Pay.

  • Tickets can be purchased from the ticket machines at the station.

Travelling by Tram and Metro

In cities such as Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague and Utrecht, trams and metros are a fast and convenient way to reach your destination.

  • Check stops and departure times via 9292.nl or Google Maps.

  • Always remember to check in and check out on the tram or metro.

  • Check in using a valid ticket, your contactless debit card, credit card, Apple Pay or Google Pay.

  • Tickets can be purchased from the driver.

Travelling by Bus

Travelling by bus is another easy way to get around the Netherlands. Bus stops are easy to recognise by the familiar bus stop sign.

  • View departure times via 9292.nl or Google Maps.

  • Always remember to check in and check out when travelling by bus.

  • Check in using a valid ticket, your contactless debit card, credit card, Apple Pay or Google Pay.

  • Tickets can be purchased from the driver.

  • Press the STOP button shortly before your stop. Wait until the bus has come to a complete stop before checking out and leaving the bus.

Discover the Netherlands by OV-fiets

The Netherlands is famous for its cycling culture! For shorter distances, cycling is often the quickest and most enjoyable way to explore a city.

  • Rent an OV-fiets at participating railway stations.

  • Use OVpay in the NS app to link your bike rental and pay.

  • You pay a small daily fee for using the bicycle.

  • After your ride, simply return the bicycle to the same station where you collected it.

Useful Tips for Travelling by Public Transport

When using an escalator at a station, remember the Dutch rule: stand on the right, walk on the left. This allows passengers in a hurry to pass.

If you have an important appointment, it's wise to take an earlier connection than planned, as occasional service disruptions can occur.

Public transport is busiest during the morning and late afternoon rush hours, so you'll have a better chance of finding a seat if you avoid these peak times.

Luggage is welcome on public transport, but please be considerate of other passengers. Keep your backpack on your lap or use the luggage racks available on trains and buses whenever possible.
