The 25 Best Free Things to Do in Amsterdam

Amsterdam is a wonderful city to visit, even if you don’t feel like spending any money. With these 25 tips, you can discover the entire city – from trendy Noord to chic Oud-Zuid – without spending a cent.

1. Hop on the ferry

From Amsterdam Central Station, take the ferry to Amsterdam Noord. Enjoy the views across the water and take in striking buildings such as the EYE Film Museum and the A’DAM Tower. All ferries are free and run all day. You’ll be on the other side of the water within minutes.

2. See the graffiti outside the Straat Museum

The ferry to the NDSM Wharf takes you to the Straat Museum. This former warehouse is filled with impressive street art and graffiti created by artists from around the world. Even the outside of the building is part of the collection, featuring a giant, colourful portrait of Anne Frank.

3. Watch the flamingos at Artisplein

A hidden gem in the city is Artisplein, next to the zoo. On this public square you can hear animal sounds and look straight out at Artis Zoo’s flamingos.

4. Relax on the rooftop terrace at NEMO

On sunny days, enjoy the view from the rooftop terrace of the NEMO Science Museum. Climb 120 steps to reach this freely accessible terrace, where you can sit back and relax in the sun.

5. Walk across the Magere Brug

Perhaps the most photographed bridge in Amsterdam, the Magere Brug spans the River Amstel and connects Kerkstraat with Nieuwe Kerkstraat. In winter, the bridge is lit with small lamps which, combined with the reflection on the water, create a romantic atmosphere in the evening.

6. Admire the ‘Seven Countries Houses’ in Roemer Visscherstraat

Seven houses in a row, each inspired by the architectural style of a different European country. This is one of the most famous works of Dutch architect Tjeerd Kuipers, built in 1894. The Italian house resembles a palace, standing next to a Spanish villa. A must-see for architecture lovers!

7. Unwind in the Rijksmuseum Gardens

The beautiful gardens surrounding the Rijksmuseum are a popular spot to enjoy nature in the heart of the city. Discover sculptures, ponds and lawns, and challenge each other at the life-sized chessboard.

8. Taste cheese in one of the cheese shops

In every cheese shop, staff are happy to help you discover the most delicious cheeses – and of course tasting is part of the experience. Want to try more? Treat yourself to a piece of authentic, flavourful Dutch cheese.

9. Visit the Book Market in Oudemanhuispoort

This passage of book stalls is more than four centuries old. The building is now part of the University of Amsterdam. Visit this special place to explore its history and the wide selection of books.

10. Stroll through the Vondelpark

This city park in Amsterdam Zuid is an oasis of calm. With green fields, winding paths, ponds and artworks, it’s the perfect place to walk, cycle or jog. In summer, it’s also ideal for a picnic.

11. Get lost in the streets of the Jordaan

There’s always something to discover in the Jordaan. Wander along the canals, through charming streets and past historical sights.

12. Explore the Begijnhof

Hidden behind an inconspicuous door on the Spui is the 14th-century Begijnhof. A visit to this courtyard takes you straight back to the Middle Ages.

13. Visit the Amsterdam City Archives

The city’s archive has preserved documents, personal records, images and stories for almost 750 years. The exhibition, cinema room and information centre can all be visited free of charge.

14. Sit on the bench from The Fault in Our Stars

Fans of the film will instantly recognise this spot on the Leidse canal. The main characters, Gus and Hazel, sit here in one of the most iconic scenes.

15. See the Seven Bridges of the Reguliersgracht

From the right angle, Reguliersgracht offers a unique view of seven bridges all in a row.

16. Admire the VOC ship at the National Maritime Museum

This impressive ship is a detailed reconstruction from the era of the Dutch East India Company. It was used to transport spices, porcelain, tea and textiles from Asia to Europe. It’s already a beautiful sight from the outside. With a museum ticket, you can also board the ship.

17. Visit the St Joseph’s Church

St Joseph’s Church is a listed national monument in the heart of Amsterdam, and free to visit. Admire its colourful stained-glass windows and striking architecture.

18. Take a look in the Willet-Holthuysen garden

The beautiful garden of the Willet-Holthuysen Museum is a hidden gem on Amstelstraat.
